What to Expect at Mass

We hold that through physically manifesting Himself in our world, particularly in the sacraments, Jesus Christ completes the work of redemption. As disciples of Christ, we share communion with him in the breaking of bread and prayers that are the Eucharist. We consider liturgy to be truly sacred because it is the primary way we as Christians unite with Christ in prayer, worship, and thanksgiving. Although the Church is active in many other ways, liturgy is the “summit” towards which all other activity is directed, and the “font” from which all power for ministry flows.

We offer ourselves to God at the Liturgy of the Eucharist during Mass. We get a glimpse of the divine liturgy that we are already traveling toward. It can be scary or even perplexing to attend Mass for the first time, but don't panic! Take a moment to unwind, consider the sights and sounds, pray in your own words, and pay attention to God's Word.

In the modern world, finding entertainment is simple. Mass is special because it provides a place for contemplation and prayer as well as a chance to share the triumphs and tragedies of daily life with our Lord Jesus Christ.

The History of Our Church

Founded in 1974 with Father John Vereb as the founding pastor, Our Lady Queen of Heaven served the Catholics in North Lauderdale. The first Vigil Sunday Mass was celebrated on October 19, 1974 at what is now the North Lauderdale Senior Citizens Center. The growing parish also celebrated Mass at a number of other sites, including local fire stations, schools and storefronts. Father Vereb served the growing parish until he became ill and in 1975, Father John McGrath became pastor. A rectory and parish offices were established on Kimberly Boulevard, where the rectory remains to this day.

Parishioners constructed a church, dedicated in 1979 and a parish hall, dedicated in 1982. From its inception, the parish gained a reputation for its warmth and care. Volunteers organize and staff dances, parties, carnivals, dinner, flea markets, fundraisers and other activities that support its outreach ministries, including religious education classes.

A 1987 capital campaign funded a larger parish center and a small chapel for perpetual adoration, dedicated in 1988. The parish continues to serve the community and each other.

What We Believe

  • The Trinity
We believe in one God, made up of three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God made us to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in the next. (1 John 5:7, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30)

  • Founded by Jesus
We are the original Christian Church, which Jesus himself founded. He appointed Peter the first pope and Pope Francis is the successor of Peter: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

  • Scripture and Sacred Tradition
All Catholic teachings are founded in Sacred Scripture and Holy Tradition. The latter is teachings and spiritual guidance handed down through the apostles and papacy since the Church’s beginnings. No teaching or tradition can contradict Scripture. Paul himself supports the concept of passing on Holy Tradition: “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.” (2 Thesselonians 2:15)

  • The Eucharist
We believe that, at the Last Supper, Jesus gave us the gift of Himself through the Eucharist, that is his own Body and Blood under the appearances of bread and wine. We believe that the bread and wine presented at Mass become the Real Presence of Jesus: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. (Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24, Luke 22:17-20, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

  • The Saints
We believe that holy men and women who have come before us still pray for us and help us. They are our friends in Heaven. We do not worship them. We only worship God. But we do ask for their prayers, just as we might ask a friend on earth to pray for us. We particularly ask Jesus’ mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, for her prayers, that we may draw closer to her Son. (James 5:16, 1 Timothy 2:1, Revelation 8:3-4)
